setting it earlier could do more harm than good. you could lose power and torque if set too early.

Perhaps, but all VTEC does is open the cylinders more and lets in more air, I'm not sure exactly what kind of oil pressure you need in order to do this, but I don't think it's a big deal since it's not too much earlier than stock. I think the most you can mod it to is like 1000 rpms earlier (if that) to kick in.
