Well, even though the ride on 18" wheels aren't that bad as most folks think, the problem lies in the width of the wheel/tire combo. Majority of the 18's that are made for the sport compact market are 7.5" and the tire that you mate with that width is sized 215.
Now even though you do get an 18" wheel that has a +42mm offset, you would rub. Even if you don't lower the car and leave a two-finger gap between the tire and the fender, you would rub just hitting bumps and whatnot during normal driving.
So unless you're planning on using the 18's as show wheels, I wouldn't recommend it.
