CV joints aren't just "on the end of your axles...". The inboard cv joints, although less prone to mechanical & boot damage, are able to "pop out" of the differential if a severe pothole is hit just right. They'll leak trans fluid, and scare the shit out of you, but won't immediately incapacitate the car.
The original poster was right; this really doesn't sound like a bad cv. The classic symptom of which is the clunking sound most audible under initial acceleration with the steering wheel turned.

Did you say you did the clutch r&r yourself? If so, was the locking nut for the lower arm torqued properly with the car's weight on the suspension? You may have induced some binding noise there, or, the upper strut bearing may be about played and/or not be seated right. That's a sound you're likely to hear over speed bumps, for example.
