Has anyone painted their valve cover and exhaust manifold heat shield?

I am wondering what I need to do to prep the surface. The valve cover looks good and doesn't really need paint, but the heat shield has all these little rust spots and could stand some preservation. I know that it needs to be sanded, but do I need to use a special hi-temp primer or do I just start layering on the paint?
