Sounds like you could use the valve adjustment. That should help the noise.
How well has your car been maintained? Like drumsy said there are maintenance intervals for certain things on any car. If they have not been done then they need to be. Or you can wait till everything breaks and foot the bill when the car says so instead of taking care of the problem on your schedule. And it is usually more expensive to fix a broken part than the maintenance to keep it from breaking.
