before we tell this guy that he has to get a new starter or ignition, how about starting with the basics?

check the following:
- spark plugs
- spark plug wires
- distributor cap
- rotor
- fuel filter

if you haven't replaced those in a while (or don't know if the previous owner ever did), it'd be wise to try them first.
