Battery acid isn't really all that bad for you. I used to be a technician for GNB Technologies (DC power) and if we forgot to bring our pH meters, we would dip in our pinkies and taste it for acidity. I'm fine, I think. The acid isn't as bad as you think, however an exploding battery is some serious shit. The acid when it explodes mixes with the gases and that makes some nasty stuff, trust me from experience, don't get that gas in your eyes. You should check your battery for fluid levels, if it isn't maintenance free, or for positive plate growth if it is. Just put a flat edge across the top of the battery and if it is higher on the positive side, it'll go soon.
