Read what it says on your oil cap.

Use whatever is recommended in your owners manual. 5W30 should be suitable for just about anything. I use 5W20 in my Element all year round. Its thin enough for cold weather but protective enough for hot weather and it is what is recommended by Honda.

Older accords didn't have the recommended oil type imprinted on the oil caps... check your owner's manual. I'm sure it would recommend 5W30 for winter months and 10W30 for summer. Newer honda's require 5W20 for all seasons.

Also they have 5W20 for older honda check with your dealer.
I am about to change my oil at the end of the month and for the second time I will be using 5W20 for older hondas.
I can tell you I now get 33mpg in normal traffic and normal driving in nyc area and my car warms up faster ever since I switch from mobil1 to honda oil.

The 5W-20 thing is bullshit. They only changed to that because of emissions and gas mileage, it won't protect your engine as well as 30 weighted oil. I'm kind of pissed at Honda for that h:

Why does your car warm up faster? It's probably because you have more resistance inside your engine because the 'Honda' oil doesn't lubricate as well as the Mobil1. Think about it...more resistance=more mechanical energy lost=more heat produced :happysad:

I see what you are saying and it does make sense. but if I go back to using mobil then I should expect my engine to be more protected but less gas miles?

usually I follow what the dealer recommends but I dont want to sacrifice the engine so I can just have better miles per gallon.
what about all the new cars using 5W20?

Those engines have been designed with tighter tolerances so that 5W-20 is acceptable. There's a damn good reason Honda said 5W-30 when they designed the older engines. The MPG diff between 20 and 30 will probably only be .5MPG or so.
