:FAQ: How to Remove CRX Door Panel (56K Problem)

This is actually fairly easy to accomplish. It takes about 10 min or so to remove. I did it in 15 min with no instructions.

Step #1;

Remove the screw located inside the top of the door jamb.

Step #2:

There is a screw located to the back side of the door. Remove it.

Step #3:

Remove the window crank handle. This is kind tricky because there is a pin located behind it. You will have to get a screw driver and pop it out of there. You can also use a piece of wire with a little hook in the end as shown below. When that is out just firmly tug on the base of the handle and it should come right out.

Step #4;

Remove the door speaker cover. There are two screws that are there. Just remove them. Then pull it out towards the interior to undo two clips that are on the right side of the speaker cover. Then pull it straight out towards you. It should be off now. You might have to wiggle it around a bit because there are a few clips holding it in there.

Step #5:

Remove the handle well that is located in the center of the door panel. There is a screw located directly in the center just unscrew it then pry it out around the edges and it should pop out.

Step #6:

Remove the panel that is behind the door handle. Just unscrew the screw behind the handle. Put the lock in the locked position and pull the handle slightly out. Then pull around the edges of the cover and it should just pop out.

Step #7:

Next look under where the speaker cover was. There are two screws located to the right of the speaker. Unscrew them

Step #8:

Now all that is left is to remove the actual panel from the door. Around the bottom of the panel are a few plugs that hold the panel to the door. All you have to do is firmly yank on the bottom of the panel. These plugs will just pop right out. There are about 5-8 depending on which year CRX you have.

Step #9:

All that is left is to pull the panel off of the door. It has a lip at the top of the panel that is lipped over where the bottom of the window is. You will have to pull up on the panel and un attach that lip. Be careful though because there is a sharp piece of of plastic at the top of the lip and you can scratch the panel by your mirrors really badly. Now that the top, bottom and sides are all free you just have to slightly rotate the panel to remove it from the piece of metal that the handle well was attached too. Then it should be off with no more work needed.

More regarding removing the clip for the window handle. First, the clip can be installed the other way-- as in you will hook it from the other side (the side opposite the arm w/ the knob on it). If your panel's been removed before, there's no telling how the mechanic reinstalled it.

Second is you can just use a thin rag or cloth to remove it the clip. Wrap the cloth around the ends of the clip and pull.

Third is those clips are notorious for flying off and disappearing. You can buy a pack of replacement at any auto parts store in the Help! section.

Last, to reinstall the handle, you can put the clip on it first. Then the handle just presses onto the splined rod until it clicks into place. This makes installation quicker but it's harder to be sure you have the handle lined up with the one on the opposite door. YMMV. -scott

Question?

What about the HF w/ seat belts in door? Not so much removal but can those belts be adjusted to reduce slack and possible damage to door panel when closing door?

About that scratch

The end of teh side view mirror nob has an end cap... inside is a screw, remove the screw and you can slide off the handle then the cover so as not to damage it.

The panel clips break easily when removing the panel.The vapor barrier adhesive keeps them glued to the door and they get snapped while pulling the panel.These clips are called Xmas tree clips because they look like a tree.http://northlandfasteners.biz/Store/...oducts_id=2943

There was a clip recall on the Element because they were not strong enough and the replacement part 91560-S84-A11 will fit the CRX.I replaced the door vapor barrier with vinyl carpet runner as an extra sound barrier and it does a good job.It is much easier to replace the panel with the mirror removed and prevents damage.
