I've been teaching all my autocross students this and their times drop by alot
please explain why? b/c your cars slower and easier to control while learning?

A typical person will try to wring out every last hp (thinking being faster and on the gas more will make your times lower) from the car, and in a new person's hands that's just going to mess you up even more. It's going to cause you to plow right into the next corner.

Turning on the A/C take some power away from your foot, which means you are going slower, but right now you are worried about being smoother. Being smooth makes you faster. Once you have the smoothness down then you can go faster.

One of my students I had was kamakazi. Stabbing at the gas, stabbing at the brakes, see-sawing he steering wheel back and forth. My head was being slammed around in his Eclipse. His time was about a 50.xxx.

Then I took over I drove around the course smooth enough that I said "notice you didn't have to hang on" and he blinked at me. My time was a 38.xxx.

I had him drive with the A/C and his time dropped to a 45.xxx but he was still stabbing at the brakes and gas. But since he has less hp he had to drive more conservatively.

slow down and be more smooth! most newbies think more gas more speed = faster times.
Yeah, I noticed that, the first 2 runs I had were mashing and gasin. The last and best timed run I lowered my time by 2 seconds with smoother turns

Hey thnx for the tip CivicSiRacer. Next time I'll rolll the window down, turn the AC on, see how far apart the slalom cones are, and turn earlier, which I was told to earlier anyways by this one guy. But I forgot everything once I got out there

Another thing you can do is ask for an instructor to help you out. We have many instructors that, in a whim, will jump in the car with you or drive the car for you to help you out. I have to do that several times during an autocross. I helped someone with a Z06 - WAY TOO MUCH HP For him

If you dont mind I'm moving this to the Autocross forum.
