It wasn't tripled, the Vehicle License Fee Offset was deferred, because unlike the Feds, CA cannot continue to spend money it doesn't have... There's a difference.

Yes, the increase in fees blows whale dong.
But if they didn't raise revenue on vehicle reg., they would have raised taxes somewhere else. :upset:

So go harass your state assemblyman, and ask them WTF they were doing to get us into this mess! Failing to ratify the FY2004 budget comes to mind.

Nonononono... lemme explain.

While the payment schedule for your yearly vehicle registration renewal remained the same while the VLF Offset was in effect, the money "given back" to CA drivers-in the form of the VLF Offset-meant that everyone became accustomed to paying a lower fee.

Now that the money is gone, and CA is in the worst period of debt in national history, there's no more tax surplus to give back.

Hence the deferral of the VLF Offset.

So, since the state can't spend money it doesn't have, there are only two options: Spend less, or raise more money.

The really lame thing about it is, the people who are to blame for the deficit - state assemblymen, state senators and the Governor - don't have to face the financial consequences of their fock-up.
