V6.
You can get early 90s for around $500-$1000.
And I've seen them last past 230,000 miles
They're TANKS
They're awesome in snow....

He should look into the older-style V6 maximas.
Auto, fast enough, and a good car to start out with. Pretty reliable as well.
Olds aleros are also in the same category, but i dont think you'll find one that cheap.

u can get a really sweet integra for around $3000 very clean in and out. just 1 warning the car is fast even if is auto and he will abuse it just like my 17yr cousin did and it end up bad, car n the junkyard and him n the hospital, he try making a curve at 110mph. lack of experience which is the main key.

survey says.... not likely
The only STOCK 'tegs with any real speed are gs-r/type-r, and I dont know about availability of auto on a gs-r. Probably really hurts performance, if it's available.
ls w/auto... ouch. about as bad as my old rs eclipse with auto..
I do agree with the point of your post... experience with a car is a big deal, so you want to get something safe as a first car. Its a price to pay, but you'll understand the value of the decision later.
i had a 93 plymouth duster when i was 16, it was auto and had the mitsubishi built 3.0 V6... it was quite peppy and auto too... the car was in perfect condition (all records and matienece books came with, the owner even gave us the original pamphlet for the car and the sheet they gave him when he ordered it new) and was pretty damn quick... i always said that if it was stick, id still have the car...
ps: it was pretty reliable, gas millage was good too... i only snapped the axles once... and everything on it was pretty easy to maintain...
