Use what the manufacturer recommends for the specific engine and compression ratio you have. To burn higher octane than what the car needs is a waste of money. When I had my Isuzu Trooper (88) I could run as low as 84 octane fuel.

f23a1 has a compression ratio of 9.3:1 not 8.8:1. And what if you have jet chip modified fuel curve and timing, do you need to run higher octane in that situation?

Rule of thumb: Use what octane level the engine manufacturer recommends, unless your car is modified quite a bit with a turbo or higher compression.

Special Case: On the 2003 Accord V6, Honda recommends 87 because it keeps operating costs down. However, dynos prove that using 91 increases horsepower by about 10...somehow the ECU changes the timing depending on the octane level so that it delivers more power at 91 but runs smooth at 87 with only small losses in power.
