Default Got a new computer w00t!

ABS Ultimate M5
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
1+ gig of ram
Klipsch 6.1 surround sound.......neons, 180 gig HD, the new GeForce........I think it's the 5900........I'm so excited, I've been waiting for a new computer for years. now I can finally play all of my videogames with everything turned up.

Only problem is, I'm trying to hook up my old computer to our network......so I can move all the files, and we can all access our mp3's, but the old one can't be seen by the new computer, or my roomates computers.......and vice versa. I don't get what's wrong with it, I'm typing this on my old computer, so it connects to the internet just fine....you just can't access my old one from any of the new computers.........they're all XP BTW, so that shouldn't matter. Any ideas?

yep, same workgroup, and file sharing is enabled..........in fact, at one point, the old computer and my roomates computers were sharing files just fine, then suddenly they stopped seeing each other.

All my comps are on XP and they network just fine....every time I get a new one its pretty much plug and play with a few little settings changes.

Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, Internet Protocoal (TCP/IP) are all installed under Local Area connection properties.

You can also try uninstalling the the network card drivers then reinstalling them. Make sure you have the driver for the NIC before uninstalling it.

Before all that, first check to make sure the NIC is getting a proper IP addres.

Start->run->cmd then click on the ok button.

next type in ipconfig
then press enter

If you are getting all 0s for IP then yeah you're not getting an IP.

I'm assuming you're using DHCP, so type ipconfig /release
then press enter.
Next type ipconfig /renew

I'm assuming you're using W2K or XP as the OS.

i never understood why one would need a gig of RAM. I have 650MB of RAM and only 1/3 is used when i have a lot of programs.
