Default i want to cry :(

i have an internet course for my english class, which i figured would be ok since i know how to write a paper. well it turns out my english teacher is completely disorganized about how she posts things, and i can't even figure out what our first paper topic is, and our rough draft is due this week. i had my friend look at it, and she can't even figure it out. i had sent her a message asking what the topic was, and she responded telling me the length requirements for the paper. i'm about to cry, b/c its this early in the semester and she's already posted 50 different things (and also sent the same messages to my email), i don't understand what we're supposed to be doing, and if i drop the class my mom will kill me.

sorry, i'm just really frustrated and i need to vent.

Write abouuuuuuut.....ME!!!! It's a rough draft, I can't imagine it be graded or graded very intensively. Maybe then she will get all different things like "when my dog got his manhood taken away" and "My sister is a slut bag ho" she'll understand that she didn't explain herself.

maybe one of you guys can figure it out. earliest posts are on the bottom, newest on top:

9/4/03 Commentary on your readings so far:

Appendix A teaches MLA Documentation style that we use for all papers.

Appendix B discusses theory. Deconstruction theory mentions language as metaphor. This is very important to our connection of modern music lyrics to literature. The language in a song is the SAME as the language in poetry, drama, or fiction. You can compare your readings to modern music lyrics. Copy and paste lyrics into a word document and use the lyrics with an in-text citation or the name of the song writer for the song as allusion or reference in your writing. A song MLA citation in a Works Cited lists the song writer, the song title, the CD title, the record company and the date of publication.

9/4/03 Use the language of the scholar in your discussions, drafts, and final papers.

9/4/03 WEEK 2 GREEK DRAMA AND RELATED TOPICS

Read: Appendix B and Chapter 3 and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles

Write: Virtual Group Discussions - ROUGH DRAFTS FOR PAPER 1

Compare your song to a modern tragedy such as Titanic or 9/11 and the play. Design an argumentative research essay.
WEEK 2
Rough Draft and Clustering Ideas for Paper 1

GOALS:
Processfolio is the collection of your drafts or work in the class. Effort equals success in this type of class.

Writing process is when we collect the drafts on discussion board and assignments area.

Group peer critique is when you comment on your group members' writing on assignments feedback and on all class members on discussion board.

Week 2
COMMENT ON AT LEAST ONE STUDENT POST FOR MORE POINTS IN THE PEER CRITIQUE AREA.

SAMPLE WEEK 2 POST

Song - "A Thousand Miles"
Modern Tragedy - Titanic
Oedipus Rex

Thesis: Artists use the human psyche to design songs, movies, and plays. Vanessa Carlton, James Cameron, and Sophocles employ tragic events to design plot and enhance theme.

STYLE: Thesis is the last sentence of the introduction. Connect topic sentences of developmental paragraphs to design the body of the essay. Use data from research to develop paragraphs. Use MLA style.

9/3/03 Individual virtual synchronous or asynchronous chat, email or telephone conferences are starting this week. We can use the telephone or the computer. I want to know if you understand my course, procedures, grading, points, and the website.

9/3/03 PAPER 1

Songs about 9/11 can help us discuss our thoughts on the nature of tragedy this week as well. Think about the lyrics, the feelings, the sadness, the human psyche and the nature of tragedy.

You are required to use an MLA Works Cited for Paper 1.

Use at least two outside sources.

Drama is the disciplined construction of an orderly sequence of words and actions representing a real or imaginary experience. Impersonation is added to create character, emotion and action. It was in Greece that this most remarkable transformation occurred. Rites were at first spontaneous expressions of the participant when they summoned the gods or rhapsodized on the coming of spring. The dithyramb was at first an improvised choral ode, a song of spring, but became enriched as a part of a ceremonial rite on honor of god, Dionysus, with the addition of dance and written verses by poets.

Dionysus, in whose honor drama was produced, was the god of vegetation, wine, and fertility. The Greeks considered their gods as their own ancestors who could intervene in human affairs. They were closely linked to the political life of the city-state. Sacred rites were under the administration of public leaders, rather than under a powerful priesthood. Out of the political-religious relationship, festivals included all kinds of competition such as singing, dancing, athletic and dramatic performances which were all religious expressions.

Tragedies were performed in the theatre of Dionysus, a sacred precinct on the Acropolis. The Greek religion with its human qualities was at the very core of the social culture. Great Dionysia or City Dionysia were ancient drama festivals in which tragedy, comedy, and satiric drama originated. It was held in Athens in March to honor of Dionysis. The festivals were attended by all Athenian citizens and visitors from throughout Greece. In competition for tragedy, three poets wrote, produced, and probably acted in three tragedies on a single theme. Each poet also presented a satyr play, which treated a heroic subject in burlesque fashion. In comedy, five poets competed for the prize, each with one play. The satyr play was always the work of a tragic poet, and the same poet never wrote both tragedies and comedies.

Greek tragedy was produced by Aeschylus, Euripides, and Sophocles. The dramas had a fairly rigid structure consisting of an introductory prologos; a parodos, which marks the entrance of the chorus; several episodes constituting the main action of the play; and the exodus, or conclusion, which follows the last song of the chorus.

PAPER 1

SAMPLE

Here is an excerpt from a paper on The Matrix and Greek Drama.

New research is abounding on the subject with the opening of the new movie Reloaded.

Visit this site to find an article about how the movie Reloaded begins a new genre called Spirituality Fiction.

I. SELECT A TOPIC FROM A WRITER, DRAMATIST, POET, WORK OR PERIOD IN YOUR TEXT

II. SAMPLE INTRODUCTION with THESIS

The success of the 1999 cyber adventure The Matrix is contributed to the movement of the spirit and the themes commonly found in Greek drama. The mythic structure, formidable speeches and profound actions of The Matrix compares to Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex thematically. The Matrix’s mythic structure can be compared to the irony of Oedipus Rex. Oedipus’ search for the truth correlates with the formidable speeches of The Matrix. A third comparison can be made with the profound actions of The Matrix to the prophesy of Oedipus Rex.

9/3/03 ASSIGNMENTS AREA and DISCUSSIONS AREA are our Responses, Feedback, and Grading AREAS FOR PAPERS.

I teach process theory through my virtual classroom with feedback by peer critique and formal lessons in examples and in the form of discussions for Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Place your drafts of papers as well as discussions on discussion area of connectweb as well as assignments area. I will not grade through email responses, but through a series of points that are determined by the study of your participation in all activities for a paper cycle.

You will be graded on your points for weekly discussions that are actually your paper drafts or research for the paper.

These discussions and your responses to other students' discussions or peer critiques as well as your drafts of papers stay on connectweb discussions and assignments area for me to study throughout the semester. If you need help, email at any time and I will respond in a few days. Please email through connectweb!

Grades are determined through process theory study at the end of each paper cycle. For example, I will look at your peer critiques, rough, first, second, and final drafts on connectweb and then determine the amount of points you earn. I will respond at the end of each paper cycle.

8/29/03 WEEK 2

GROUP ACTIVITIES

Participation in Virtual Journal Discussions including Peer Critiques 10%

I want to use music as a catalyst for our class to bridge the gap between literature and our modern culture.

Here is a sample short paragraph about music and literature by a student in another section. We can use music to help us write about literature. We can also use movies to write about literature. See my sample paper about The Matrix and Greek Drama in assignments area. Although you are not writing an essay this week, you can participate in discussions to begin to add points to your scores and try pre-writing. Your ideas may help you write your papers.

NOTE: Try to write a short paragraph about music and literature as you read this week. Add your paragraph to our discussion and add comments on student's posts. This is our discussion journal and adds points to your grade score.

SAMPLE STUDENT DISCUSSION POST:

If people did not create, where would our world be today, and where would be? It is funny how it all came from Egyptians, and today we have all kinds of unique writers and musicians. There are millions of ways to create. When people use their imaginations, people come together wanting to understand and get involved. Literature is one way to create. I find literature interesting because it consists of short stories, poems, novels, and plays. Many people may never think to combine all of it with music. Where would music be without literature, and where would literature be without music? It is never completely obvious in a poem and short story that the exact words were used in a favorite song of somebody’s. A lot of music comes from literature; it just depends how you look for it. Throughout this paper, I will explore a writer known as Kate Chopin and her works, Hamlet and finally the band The Goo Goo Dolls music.

8/28/03 Process Theory

We learn to write according to system called process. First, pick a topic. Next, research and collect data in a computer file. Then, write a brainstorm page of key words and ideas, then cluster ideas or group ideas. Finally, write the next stage or the outline and introduction with thesis or purpose.

Troy Outline
I. Introduction. Thesis Statement: Over the centuries, people’s fascination with Homer’s Troy has spurred them to action, from conquest to poetry, from myth to science.
II. A summary of the Iliad. Topic Sentence: At first glance, one may wonder how the story of Troy could have fascinated so many people, but it is easier to see when one has gained a true appreciation of this great literary work.
III. The fascination with Homer’s Troy. Topic Sentence: The infatuation with Troy has gripped many people, both famous and ordinary, from ancient to modern times.
IV. Heinrich Shleimann’s investigations. Topic Sentence: Heinrich Schleimann’s nearly insane obsession with Troy led him to take drastic measures: digging it up.
V. Later archeological discoveries. Topic Sentence: The archeologists after Schleimann used more organized scientific (and less damaging) methods to preserve and learn more about Troy.
VI. Conclusion. Topic Sentence: Troy has managed to survive nearly every ordeal, from earthquakes and fire to Schleimann’s reckless excavations, and still manages to enthrall people today.

Introduction
Troy. Trojan War. These words have tickled the ears and imaginations of many for millennia. People who have never even seen Troy have fallen in love with the ancient city; its captivating nature is so great. This is the city that Homer wrote about in his famous epic, The Iliad. This is the city that so fascinated Heinrich Schliemann, the man who began the first archeological excavations of Troy. This small city, that lies upon the northwest corner of Turkey, has been the inspiration of artists, writers, rulers, military commanders, et cetera. Yet, this city has also caused great controversy. Many have wondered, was there really a Trojan War? And even, before it was proven true, was there really a Troy? Perhaps it is this very controversy that has caused Troy to be so captivating. Those who believe in Troy and the Trojan War cannot only believe passively; they must fight for their love against those who would try to disprove it. They must have a passion for Troy. Over the centuries, people’s fascination with Homer’s Troy has spurred them to action, from conquest to poetry, from myth to science.

WRITING THE RESEARCH PAPER LESSON IN ASSIGNMENTS AREA
The thesis states the most clearly thought out point of your long essay. Essentially, the paper proves the thesis. In actuality, your paper will focus only on the topic presented by your thesis. In a research paper about the Civil War, the writer will focus on one aspect of the war, one person, one day or one event. The writer must approve the thesis with the instructor. In fact, the entire design of the paper will follow the logical progression of thought provided by the thesis.

VANESSA CARLTON LYRICS

"A Thousand Miles"

Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces passed
And I'm home bound

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making my way
Through the crowd

And I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
Tonight

It's always times like these
When I think of you
And I wonder
If you ever
Think of me

'Cause everything's so wrong
And I don't belong
Living in your
Precious memories

'Cause I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
Tonight

And I, I
Don't want to let you know
I, I
Drown in your memory
I, I
Don't want to let this go
I, I
Don't....

Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces passed
And I'm home bound

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making my way
Through the crowd

And I still need you
And I still miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass us by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you...

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
If I could
Just hold you
Tonight
