i don't know what happened but recently whenever i start up IE it would default to a homepage that i haven't specified. i would change it to yahoo but then upon restarting my computer and IE, it would go to that annoying website again. also seems like since this has been happening IE has been functioning VERY slowly. it takes forever just to scroll down to the bottom of a page. what gives?

Actually you probably have some spyware install or traces of a website you visited with a popup add installed some bs into your PC. Check the add/remove programs for stuff you dont recognize and also look in your c:\program files for stuff you dont recognize either.
