Used Jeep Wranglers
Money pits...the tranny and front diff gives out around 80 - 100k
Crank issues at at 100k according to what I have seen consistantly.
Stay away from high mileage Jeeps in general unless you get a fanatic with an older 70s model that has been taken care of or used off road fairly regularly.

I plan on getting a Jeep Cherokee soon. From what I have seen their trannys and transfer cases are bullet proof. Not sure if they have the same engine as the Wrangler or not though. And seeing as I never see a single post on the Jeep forums I go to about things breaking I will assume they are reliable. I mean they are OLD technology so lets hope they perfected it if they aren't going to change it.

They're not bad. A lot of 4wd cars have problems with differentials going. People have no idea they have to change or check the fluid. The biggest thing is people buying an older design and not knowing they have to grease them. Transmissions aren't a big problem in 5 speed models.
Jeep tranny's are pretty much bullet-proof, not saying there isn't an idiot out there to ruin one, but for a person who knows how to drive properly they shouldn't have any problems.
The I6 engine is a great engine, it has it's quirks and things that go out, but if you know what will happen you can prevent damage or know what's wrong when it begin's. The oil pump's go out around 100k mile's, what to look for??? oil pressure below 13psi at idle, or below 40psi while under acceleration. The rear main seal is known to go at about 125-175k mile's($500 job) what to look for, oil dripping from rear of oilpan/ transmission.
tranny's are great just make sure you have it flushed and filled regularly. Most jeeps run hot, or most people believe so. 210* is normal for a jeep, w/ a radiator upgrade the temp can be lowered.
