new car v. what do
1) Impreza Hatch
2) Focus Hatch
3) Mazda 3 Hatch (skyactiv)
Feel free to suggest anything else. I'm not looking to spend more than $25 000. I'm willing to drive either manual or automatic, as it really depends on if it's a good gearbox. I would consider certified used. And...I really don't want another sedan/coupe.
+AWD
+Road manners
+Visibility
-AWD
-Transmission (5sp manual is vague, CVT is good for a CVT but still a CVT
-Steering (accurate, but light and numb)
-Dealer in fairly inconvenient location

Focus Hatch would be my choice
Fords come a long way with the ford focus.
Although the impreza would be more practical
You mentioned that the dealer is far away,if you give them a call they'll come pick you up to test drive it!

If new: Focus hatch, no doubt about it and get a manual.
Last I read, the smaller Fiesta had problems with its dual-clutch automatic, but the Focus has done very well in initial quality.
Nissan Juke could be interesting -- if you dig the styling.
But manuals are FWD only.
If we're talking used, I think small utes: RAV4 V6, Mitsubishi Outlander V6 XLS, Honda CRV would be my top 3.
The Toyota and Mitsubishi are faster, but the CRV will be the strongest on resale.

the mazda will get you much better equipped for the money than the focus and they are basically the same car. I LOVED my Mazda, one of the best cars I have ever owned, and the new skyactiv is pretty impressive. Impreza is well an impreza not much mystery there.
Also, my Mazda 3 hatch held it's value insanely well. I believe for 2010 it had the highest resale value in it's class for what it's worth.

I'd do the focus or 3 wagon.
fiesta's are all right if you're looking at them. my neighbor is a master tech at ford and said the "auto transmissions suck on the fiesta they are clunky and take a while to shift. get the 5 speed manual if you are going to buy one."
