"This standard, also known as High-Speed USB, is an evolutionary development of USB 1.1. It was intended for fast peripheral devices, like scanners, digital cameras and external drives. The maximum theoretical speed of USB 2.0 exceeds that of USB 1.1 by 40 times: 480Mbit/s against 12Mbit/s! USB 2.0 is backward-compatible with USB 1.1, thus it’s possible to plug a USB 1.1 device into a USB 2.0 connector. In this case, the data-exchange speed would be no more than 12Mbit/s – the speed of USB 1.1. "

Pentium 3 = Not USB 2.0 (only laptops made in the last year or so will be USB 2.0). You can check in the device manager and see if it lists a USB 2.0 Controller, but most likely it's not. If your laptop has a firewire port, that would be fast enough to use but older laptops usually don't.

You can buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card for around $30 or so but honestly, I'd stick that harddrive in a desktop system and just access it through a network. If all you want is to shove your documents off for a backup once in a while, that would probably be the least hassle.

480Mb/s = 60MB/s or just below ATA66 speed.

however, I doubt you have USB 2.0 so you're looking at 12Mb/s which is ~1.5MB/s

you can always buy a USB 2.0 PC card and use that.
