New PC Build
.....I'm sure there will be 100s of posts telling me why everything is wrong
anywhooo, i had a Shuttle PC that i used for years that I loved. I put it in storage while I was Basic & AIT. I had it shipped to me from my storage unit to use once I got stationed in Germany. In the interim, I had bought an inexpensive laptop to use & liked Win7 much better than XP, so looked into upgrading the Shuttle. It had older type ram, so upgrading was gonna be ridiculous.
So when I went back to the states back in April to get married, I just went to Best Buy & picked up a cheap lil E-Machine to use until I could get everything together for a real PC build. The E-Machine is going to the wife once I'm done. She has the Shuttle now & will pass it on to her daughter for school work & such.
I looked at one of Tigerdirect's bare-bones kits, but every one of them had something I didn't like or would change about them, so in the end I just decided to piece together everything part by part
So, here's everything I've gotten so far:
* NZXT Case...this met all my requirements (small-ish, QUIET, lots of internal drive bays, etc)
* Gigabyte GA-880GM Motherboard...I chose this mainly cause it's AMD & could handle 16gb ram
* AMD 3.4ghz processor...didn't feel the need to go any higher than this (ie 8-core processors & the like)
* 16gb of ram...not "top of the line", but i'm not a gamer or such so I didn't feel the need to go top-shelf
* OCZ 60gb Solid State Drive...this will be OS & main programs only. I could've gotten a bigger one, but I found a hell of a deal on this one, so there ya go
* Lite-On DVD burner...always been a Lite-On fan & it was cheap, so once again, there ya go
* Lite-On Bluray Burner....for doing backups
* (1) Western Digital 1tb Hard Drive...this will be the "data drive" for the OS & where i load non-bootup/rarely used programs
* (4) Western Digital 2tb Hard Drives...the price difference was too big for the 3tb vs the 2tb & I already had (2) 2tb in an external NAS that I was planning on moving over internally in a new RAID configuration. That will be (3) 2tb drives in a RAID 0 to make one 6tb logical drive. This will be done with other (3) drives as well. Then, the 2 6tb logical drives will be RAID 1 together for redundancy.
yes, I realized this is waaaaaay overdoing it, but I currently have about 3tb that is just my of movies, tv shows & such (not counting pics etc) that is scattered between a few external drives, so I'm trying to get everything in one place, have backup redundancy if a drive fails & have headroom to grow into down the road

just a simple g-force....think it was like $50. I just needed something that had DVI for my monitor & HDMI for my 50" tv since I watch movies off the pc on the tv in my barracks
& yes....got married 13 april 2011 :-D .....coulda swore I posted pics?

your math is off.....
(4) new 2tb drives = 8tb
(2) current 2tb drives = 4tb
equals 12tb for the RAID plus another 1tb for the "data drive"
....& if I don't end up selling them, I still have (2) 2tb external USB hard drives too :hsughr:
