they would have to eat a lot of chocolate, like a whole hersey bar, or snickers.. and most of the time it just makes them really sick for a few days

He'll be fine. Simply licking chocolate is negligable. A dog that size would have to consume 5 or 6 pounds of chocolate to be life-threatening (2.25-2.75 kilos). Chocolate contains theobromine. It causes their hearts to race and they eventually go into a coma and possibly die. Vomiting is a symptom, but the dog should be fine. That's not much chocolate at all.

as long as its a lick of chocolate its okay, but consuming a large portion of a chocolate bar will make a dog sick.

i was told that large amounts of chocolate would give a dog cancer :dunno: but you can call a vet to make sure what to do.

It's a poison. Theobromine (C7H8N4O2) is very close to caffein. If you were to eat that much chocolate you'd probably get sick just as well. Of course, with any stimulant it you're going to be bouncing off of the walls and such. It's also diuretic. Meaning, it makes you piss. The dog should be fine.
