what does BHP mean?

Yes it is Brake Horsepower, and as I recall, it basically means horsepower measured at the wheels, as opposed to the crank.

bhp usually refers to 'base horse power'...meaning the hp at the flywheel. like a b16 may have 160 bhp; this is the hp dealers/advertisers like to mention in their ads, since base hp is higher than hp at the wheels.
whp is wheel horse power, the hp you actually get.

When the magazines say BHP, they say brake horsepower.

"Brake Horsepower
Brake horsepower (bhp), sometimes called shaft horsepower, is the amount of power available for useful work. Bhp is less than ihp because of the various power losses which occur during engine operation.
To determine the brake or shaft horsepower that is delivered as useful work by an engine, the sum total of all mechanical losses must be deducted from the total ihp."
I'd take it as meaning brake horsepower.
