Default Just saw a Corvette blow its tranny on the highway!

I was driving to work this morning on US 36 right outside of Boulder, Colorado. About 4 cars ahead of me, there was a white Corvette (maybe a 2000?). All of a sudden, I see a bunch of smoke and the Corvette starts to brake and pull off to the side. I'm cruising at about 75 mph, watching this Corvette up ahead pull over, when I look in front of me and see a bouncing lump of metal in the middle of my lane! I swerve into the next lane, and as I look at this chunk I realize it's the Vette's transmission! There was an oil slick leading from the tranny right to where the Vette was parking on the shoulder. An Audi A8 was pulling up behind the Vette, and I think his front bumper was cracked, though I was cruising by pretty quickly so it was tough to tell. I think he got hit by the bouncing tranny.

It was a very odd experience. I felt bad for the poor Vette driver.

True, but if your tranny falls off while you're doing 75, is it just going to stay under the car? I think your car would probably jerk its way over it.

In all reality, I'm not absolutely sure it was the transmission, since I'm not exactly sure what that looks like on a Vette. it was a large casing (ripped open, it looked like only about half of it was there) and I could see gearing strewn about. I don't know what else it could have been.:dunno:

Edit -- Falkor, how come you didn't eat that little punk Atrayu (sp?) I bet he would have tasted good.

damn.. thats crazy man.. but i dunno if it was the tranny. there are soo many bolts to keep a tranny in place, and the drive shaft should or might have come with it? could it have been a piece of the bell housing around the tranny? :dunno:

either way, thats still crazy
