Dear UCI Students and Families:

As you are no doubt aware, the budget situation in the State of
California remains problematic. The current impasse, coupled with a
wide variety of potential budget scenarios, has led to a great deal of
uncertainty for the University of California and UCI.

On July 17, in an effort to protect the quality of our instructional
programs, the UC Regents voted to raise 2003-04 UC systemwide
educational fees $960 above the current level. Additionally, the
Regents gave UC President Richard C. Atkinson authority to increase
fees by an additional 5 percent, should the state budget situation
require.

The decision on a final fee level is expected to be made within the
next 1-2 weeks, before fall billing statements are sent to you.

Initially, and as a result of the Regents decision:

for resident undergraduates, this increases UC systemwide fees to
about $4,800 per year

UC Irvine campus based fees remain unchanged and will be $1,180 per
year (This includes the $552 mandatory Health fee which can be waived
with proof of health insurance)

for undergraduates with family incomes of $60,000 or less, the
increase will generally be covered by financial aid, and
undergraduates with family incomes of $60,000-$90,000, will have a UC
fee grant cover about half of the increase

UCI students with financial aid can visit http://www.fao.uci.edu/ to
get the most current information on their status.

Unfortunately, until a state budget is adopted and we know the
magnitude of the state budget reductions to UC in the coming year, we
will not be able to determine all of the specific consequences to our
campus, and our students, faculty and staff.

For additional information about the UCI, UC and State of California
budgets, as well as fiscal conditions in the rest of the nation,
please visit http://www.evc.uci.edu/

We will do our best to keep you informed and updated regarding the
budget situation and any additional action concerning student fees.

Sincerely,
Manuel N. Gómez
Vice Chancellor
UCI Student Affairs
the school is raising tuition $960, with the possibility of a 5% increase on top of that
