been really tempted, but no, I've never done it.
when my husband and I were still dating, he once jumped in the car on impulse and drove to see me in NJ (he was in MD). he made it in 3 hours.

i've done it a couple of times. once in 98. i left early on a thursday morning (after my english class) and drove from arizona to texas for a concert that was on saturday night. it took 24 hours to get there and 21 to get back (i was driving by myself). i stayed with a friend in her dorms (which didn't allow guys even in the dorms, let alone to stay there). it was pretty fun. a really really long drive.
i've also done short trips, like deciding on a saturday morning that i'd drive to arizona to see my dad or to get lunch (yes, my mom and i have driven to arizona for lunch and driven back).
and i also did it a coupld times when i lived in south carolina. once to atlanta on my birthday to see my girlfriend's aunt. i don't remember how long it took us to get there. i remember it was about 12 hours to get home because we stopped at a drive-in (they don't have any over here anymore) and i also missed a freeway so we had to go through the country-land of georgia (i.e. we stopped at the drive-in in jasper, georgia and the only other thing to do there was go to the country dancing bar/club).
the other time when i was over there was when we drove down to florida to see my girlfriend's mom. she lived in naples, and on the way down we stopped in tamba bay to see her sister. we were there for a coupld of days i think, and it only took a day of planning.
that's all the trips i can think of, but i wanna go on another one soon. i'm thinking about driving to somewhere that sells good fireworks (stuff that shoots in the air) next year. i don't know of the closest place that does (other than mexico and i don't really want to go there) so i may drive closer to the east coast (i know georgia sells them).

I tend to be the guy that plans ahead, so as far as impulsive 500 mile plus drives...the answer's no.
But for shorter distances, say Hwy 1 from Mill Valley up the coast for about 150 miles, then over and down, winding through the Napa Valley and such, yeah.
I'm getting serious about planning a HAN Mille Miglia for the West Coast. :woowoo:
So stay tooned.
