Default No oil = bad...Friend Needs Car Help!

Hey guys, sorry for putting this in the basement, but traffic will ensure this will get read...

cliff notes:
buddy drives car 50 miles without oil, now it's knocking i think. need help!

My housemate's got a 96 Saturn SC2...he was driving home from work tonight (50 mile trip) and his oil light came on...now he knows nothing about cars at all, so he kept driving, figuring it would go off or something. he then heard his engine get louder as he described it, and his temp gauge went higher as he got into town.

so he tells me this, and i check his oil level. completely empty, and it looked like semi-fresh oil around the valve cover and engine block. i couldn't tell if it was freshly leaked because his engine is super dirty.

we filled fresh oil and he started it to show me what he heard (a sound he thought was no oil indicator i guess). it definitely sounds like it's knocking in one cylinder.

can you guys diagnose this? without oil, what could or should be wrong after driving it 30+ miles like that? any help is greatly appreciated.

i have work til 9pm EST when i'll be back on to get help. thanks in advance guys, and don't hate on a saturn!

Put oil in it and hope it runs again.

Beat it while you can, then ditch it in a hole.
