Would you give up a "good" career to find happiness?
Basically..I'm fed up my whole situation right now. I'm not married, no kids, no real ties to Virginia other than my immediate family living in the area. My job is nothing but stress 24/7 as I have no back up or help so I'm left covering state wide issues. Management is bullshit, worst its ever been and has been that way for the last 3 years. With the company slowly going down, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. No real opportunities just cut backs and absorption of additional duties. I've come to determine that the IT field is not for me. No I don't want to work 14 hour days...get called while I'm out of the office, and still have the drive to always be studying the latest and greatest in my field to keep my head above water.
Yes that money is pretty good but I've been asking myself for the past couple years...is this really worth it? Life is definitely too short to be stressed as much as I am.
I'm willing to start cutting all my expensive hobbies, and toys out of the picture. Sell my truck/house and move. I've got some savings set aside to keep me okay for a bit. Thoughts are to possibly move to Florida [grew up here and also have family] or maybe back to Hawaii where I lived for 5 years and still have lots of friends. Basically start fresh somewhere and begin a new life. No big $ making career necessary...just something that will put a roof over my head and food on the table.
You guys ever consider this?

Damn right and you are a smart, bold mother fucker if you do...because guess what? You only live once and living stressed the fuck out each day is for suckers. If you have no responsibilities then I say fuck it - try it.
why don't you start looking for another job. put your resume out there and see what comes up. and why you're at it. cut back on some things to save some money. and say fuck you to your boss every once and a while. :dunno: about the last part.

I told more than one boss to stick it... it was good work and I did whatever came along for quite a while. In my twenties I started a sign painting/carving business, moved on to hotel engineering, worked as a projectionist in a theater (got paid by how many shows I showed at night) commercial fishing, hanging iron, and back to hotel engineering. In my thirties I worked in hotel engineering the company moved me twice with promotions. Left one chain and went to another then left hotel engineering and started my business remodeling kitchens and baths in my early forties. Only thing I wished I had done was to put away more money to use in retirement, I ended up blowing through a couple of 401Ks.
