Lebron James

I don't know how many hoop fans we have here, but to be honest I'm not one. I hate the new street ball style of play the NBA has, and look at my old Cavs of Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, Craig Ehlo, Steve Kerr, Larry Nance, and John "Hot Rod" Williams as the last of the days when basketball was an art form more than just a street game. But I must say I'm getting in to Lebron James a little bit now. Mabe because we haven't seen this much hype over our Cavaliers since they routed Larry Bird and the Celtics in game 7 of the 1992 Easter Conference semi-finals. But I wonder what the rest of the country thinks about him. So anyone is welcome to share their opinions here. I'm very curious as to whether the hype is just in Cleveland or if this guy is perceived as the real deal in the rest of the country.

Explain to me how the NBA is like streetball....because they are two completely different things.

And FYI, street basketball is an artform...check out an AND1 Mixtape.

Im puertorican so dont take this bad people

Is there any MIXED sports anymore?.... basketball... is more black then mix... football same thing...boxing...im not going to go there...golf..but who the **** likes golf...hockey...yea white... but its a ok sport we all like to just see them fight....

So what eles?...

Street ball and bball... both the same...to me...that new show on MTV on sundays... one of the street ballas was going to the NBA but broke some thing.. Iverson is a street baller ...

fastball 06-27-2003 05:13 PM

Alrighty then. I seem to have opened a heated debate, which I didn't want to do. I guess I'm tired of the thug, gangster, and asshole attitude most of the younger NBA players have. Lebron seems to be different, and I hope he holds true over time. He seems to be a throwback to the days when players listened to their coaches, played more to win than for the money, and embrace the city they play for. You don't hear James talk about himself...... he's always talking about improving his team, getting more wins, and making his teamates better. That's the way I was raised when I played in high school, and if he can inspire the NBA to return to that attitude, I think you'd see higher ratings for the games (just so you know, the National Dog Competition on Animal Planet network beat the NBA playoffs in ratings) and more of the small cities (like Cleveland) interrested again.

to him, streetball=flashy

that being said im sure you can figure out how they are alike. The And1 mixtapes are off the hook, it's amazing what those guys can do.

what, you want affirmative action in sports too? It's nobody's fault that mostly blacks are in most sports, they are just more athletic and apply themselves to something they love, don't hate. And that show on MTV sundays is :ghey: Those guys are not the cream of the crop when it comes to streetballers, for that, you'd have to check out the And1 mixtape cats. That show is too much like a damn game show, im not feeling it at all. And don't single out Iverson as being a street baller, Jason Williams, Marbury, the list can go on and on. Iverson may be a stretballer style, but why would that suprise you, that's where 99% of the people in the NBA etched out the skills they have today. The only time I have a problem w/streetball stuff in the NBA is when it hurts the team, other than that, go for it, makes for a more exciting game.

I don't know enough about this dude to have an opinion on him. But I hope he's not coming into the league w/the same cockiness that Kobe came in with cause he's in for a rude awakening just like Kobe. Kobe was riding high on his "the next mike" hype when he came into the league, and he finally came to a point when he realized that the hype wasn't getting it done on the court and he had a lull, then came back w/a vengance. We'll see how James does, I hope he does good, hasn't been this much hype about the draft since Iverson came into the league in 96-97.

Yeah. Ironic thing about that shot was that Ron Harper was supposed to cover Jordan on the in bounds. Harper and Ehlo got crossed up on the play, and Ehlo was the closest to him. Harper was obviously a better match up, but Ehlo wasn't in position, anyway. So even if Ehlo had better defensive skills, it was more of a team breakdown than Craig's inability to guard Jordan. But as far as Lebron James is concerned, I do not see him very self centered at all. He always talks about teamwork and making sure everyone else is ready. That's why I think he's going to be different than Iverson or Bryant or any other young prodigy.

As for my streetball comparison, when I was growing up, players respected the game, their coaches, and the cities they played for. You never heard of them punching a coach, starting fights on the court, or getting in to trouble hanging around gangs or making a rap record even. They played basketball, and that was it. They trusted their coaches, played hard, and didn't act like jerks. Sure, there were a few rotten apples, but mostly they really were people you would not your kids looking up to. The NBA was magical in the 1980's. Just the Celtics and Lakers alone made it fantastic. But the Hawks with my favorite coach, the "Czar" of the telestrator, and then of my Cavs.... Portland had Clide Drexler, and yes, as much as I hated him, M.J. in his prime (should have never came back to the Bullets -- to me they aren't the Wizzards). I could go on, but I won't. Just wanted to gauge what the country thinks about Lebron.

Ah, yes, the good ol' days. Oh yeah, it's Clyde, hehe. He was my favorite player back in the day, definitely a class act. He carried himself back then like Tim Duncan does today. Everyone was all MJ crazed, I was Clyde "The Glide" crazed. I lived in Portland for about 6 years so I had it bad. Steve Colter, Kiki Vandeweghe, Jim Paxon, Jerome Kersey, Kevin Duckworth, Terry Porter, Buck Williams, and Sam Bowie, those were the days.

I disagree w/your Iverson statement. His game at G-town was the same as it is today, the only difference was he had more capable teammates and got them involved more. But it is a trip to look at pics of him in college, short hair faded up, no tats, no facial hair, I used to call him the babyface asassin cause he'd kill em on the court.

SuperSlow87 06-28-2003 08:44 AM

I think baseball has the best mixture of players. You have Whiteys, AAmericans, Asians (Japanese and Korean players), Hispanics and Pacific Islanders (I can think of a few).

Just last night I was at the Giants game and there where no white players in the starting lineup.

In regards to Basketball.

I still not intirely sure Lebron is going be successful. Besides the fact that he has a tremendous amount of hype built up around him, he needs a certain type of offense to use his passing skills.

Too much of NBA offense these days is throwing up shots 20+ ft away or going to one man and hopeing he does something.

i dunno.. he's good and all.. i mean he's awesome.. but we'll see how well he can bring it against some actual, better, bigger, older professionals...

fastball 06-28-2003 01:07 PM

Yeah, that's what I'm a little worried about. You know the older players in the league are going to want to go right after him. He has scrimaged against a few NBA players, though (including Michael Jordan).... he did 2 years ago when he was a junior and impressed the players then.

Thank you captain obvious.

As for Lebron, the dude is just sick tight. However, he's gonna be playing against a completely different caliber player than he's used to, and it's gonna take a while to adjust. It also can't be a one man team, he's gotta have a somewhat decent supporting cast....but he's a great player to build a team around. I think he'd be good at the #2 or #3 position...too small for center/power forward, and not experienced enough for point guard. Thankfully he's been working on his jumpshot a lot, and it's significantly improved. He definitely has the explosiveness to blow past people, and just straight jump over them...gonna be fun to watch for sure.

FDragger 06-28-2003 02:56 PM

lebron is a very good player but I fear that people will not give him the respect he deserves because of his age. hopefully he will get some help from his teammates and actually take the cavs into the playoffs.

otherwise he will be like vince carter...mad talent but no success.
