Strom Thurmond is a classical example of a "good old boy" from the south, has repeatedly voted against social reform and environmental protection, horribly pro-states rights, and ran for the presidential ticket during the sixties with his main goal of reinstating segregation against blacks.

He's also credited with turning the south from Democrat to Republican, through somehow convincing the poor whites that tax breaks for the rich benefit them.

I'm very political, BTW, and in retrospect that last comment was unfair, but I don't feel like deleting it.:fawk:

He does hold several congressional records. One is the longest service. Another two are "the longest filibuster to prevent the passing of a civil right bill" and "longest time in service by a Senator that passed no significant legislation".

Bah... I'll try not to incite anything here on HAN, but he was consistantly an impediement to social progess in the senate.

when Thurman started out he was a Democrat... that's how old that fool was. then he turned republican after the views of the two changed or something. vaguely remembering from Gov't in HS.

Man some of you dont really know the old bag to well.
This guy was a major part of history for the past half centruy. Good or bad. Yeah he had some serious racist issues in his past but changed. First Southern Sen to hire an africian-american staffer, first Sen to support an Africian-American Judge to seat, and completely supported creating a holiday for MLK Jr.

Oh yeah and he voluteenered for the Army in WWII when he was over the age limit to be drafted. Stopped his political career for that too. Dropped into France with the 82nd during DDay. Only Senator to be elected to office via a write-in ballot.

Rest in Peace old man, you've done this country well
