Will it automatically put the necessary startup files back?

first of all, delete any programs that you never use anymore.

well first of all tell us these things:

1. What OS?
2. What processor/speed
3. How much RAM?
4. How big of a HD do you have etc.

agreed.

you should be able to find some ram for decent prices. i'd recommend at least 256. but you'll need to find out what type of ram your comp uses.

I'm guessing since he's using 98 and has only 64MB, he's probably using PC100....should be cheap as nutz right now.

If it's a name brand, you can give us the model # and it's easy to find out. If not, you can open your case and find out the model # of the motherboard.

just picked up a 512MB stick of PC133 ram for $41, no shipping charge. try pricewatch.com, i've found great prices by searching for retailers on there.

when i bumped my p2 300mhz vaio laptop's ram from 32mb to 160mb, it made a world of difference. toss a 128mb stick in there and you'll notice a huge difference.
