Cisco Certified Network Associate

is it worth it to get this?

flipped cracka 06-16-2003 12:10 AM

i don't know. i took all the classes and could have taken the major test but just never did. i suppose if you wanted a job doing cisco stuff, it would help, but i've never seen a need for it. but i've never really liked doing cisco stuff anyway. :dunno:

how does it work? how long did the classes take? do you jus take a test after u take the classes and if u pass, u get it?

i jus graduated college .. jus lookin for some stuff to build up my resume

flipped cracka 06-16-2003 12:26 AM

the classes were part of my schooling. 4 "semesters" as they call it. 9 weeks each. you take small tests on the chapters as you go and then a final exam (which is just questions from those chapters on a longer test....same questions even for the most part). all the tests in the class are online and multiple choice. and once you've taken cisco 1-4, you can take the real test (which costs money of course). it's like $100 to take the major test i think. and it's not multiple choice (some of it might be, but definitely not all of it). it's mostly hand-on....you have to fix a problem, or set up routers and switches and stuff. i know i wouldn't have passed the test if i took it because we didn't learn all the stuff we would have needed.

flipped cracka 06-16-2003 12:27 AM

btw, my second degree is actually based on the cisco classes i took but i'm not cisco certified. go figure. :oh:

TidusBlue 06-16-2003 12:29 AM

you can make major bank by being cisco certified... It's totally worth it if you can afford it.

cause i went to a tech school, and the school was a cisco certified school (so they could teach the classes) and they made us take the classes (since i was a networking major).

flipped cracka 06-16-2003 12:40 AM

i think it was just $100 for us because we took all the classes and stuff. looking at prices online, i see between $100 and $200 for each test. there's a lot of tests you can take. books are expensive too. i still have all my cisco books somewhere.

so.. was going to a tech school worth it? how was the job placement? are you making big $$$ now?

i would say that ir probably wasn't worth it for me. it was crazy expensive and all i have a couple of 2 year degrees. job placement was really crappy (they didn't do anything for me, but i also didn't hound them about it). i haven't been making big $$$, but i just got a new job (haven't even started it yet) and it should be for decent money. but i graduated about a year ago. it all depends on how motivated you are. if want to just get something and be done, the tech school was great. great hours, decent size classes, ok teachers. but if you can take school and can handle the work, i'd suggest a real university where you get a real degree (from a school people know of) that has some credit behind it.

i jus graduated (last saturday) from univ. of california, irvine .. uh, yah.. and got a pair of bachelors degrees in political science, and the other in sociology. dont know what direction i want to take as far as career path goes, so im jus trying to keep my options open right now

rick 06-16-2003 06:03 AM

duck if you are interested try one of the self study guides. $250.

then you take the test whenever you feel you are ready.

better yet go to a local library, they usually have CCNA books.

however don't expect to get a job just based on you having the certs

Now if you have CCIE (routting and switching) and a 3-5 years of experience, you'll make major bank. To my knowledge there are less than 10,000 people in the world with CCIE (last time I checked)

Fujiwara Takumi 06-16-2003 06:42 AM

wow, i think there are more pandas than that.

MCSE at least allows you to work anyplace that isn't exclusively Mac.

Novell is mostly used at academic locations. Which generally A) Don't pay for shit and B) Need few employees.

I am a Network Admin. Honestly if you are very technically sound and have strong networking skills then def get CISCO certified. By having no strong background and just taking the class and getting certified you will see and so will interviewers that you really dont kow shit. Basically its not a beginner cert. Get your Network +, then get MCSE then I would go to the CISCO certs.

CCNA is a good resume padder. Of course it helps too if your going to use it. Go for it.

I hinted to him while we were at the Computer Associates event last Thursday but I'm not saying too much. The more and more idiot things she does to make her self look bad says it all. I'll let her put herself into the hole. ;)

hahhaa yeah that is usually the best way :)

Kabooki 06-16-2003 01:06 PM

I heard that the pass rate is about 40%
seems like a waste of money to me, Just get the cheapo A+ certification, thats all employers know to look for anyway.

I got the 3com LAN certification, and most dont even know what that is.

accordv6vtec3r 06-16-2003 04:56 PM

I just finished the 4th semester but I am not going to take the CCNA test though. I won't pass.

www.angelfire.com/theforce/cisco3tcs/one.html
a LAN Threaded Case bullshit we had to do 3rd semester
We had to do 2 more on WAN in 4th semester.

I didn't learn anything since the 2nd semester when I started slacking. If I do decide to take the test. I got some series studying to do.
