I'm gonna be driving up to Norcal on wed. afternoon. I'll probably be leaving SD at 3, which puts me in LA around 5, for rush hour. I heard that going around LA through Pasadena might be faster and less traffic...what do you guys think? I might just wait and leave a bit later...ideas?

 

leave earlier or whenever you planned to. traffic won't be that great even after rush hour. Pasadena freeway is ok, but it can still be a bish, even at normal times...

 

I can't leave earlier than 3....I could wait til 5 and leave, putting me there at 7....

 

If you've got something more important to do, then leave at 5... but if not... you won't save a helluva lot of time in my experience.

So you think that's better than taking the 5/405 through LA?

 

Absolutely. 5 will bog down near downtown LA and will be bad until you start getting near pacoima/arleta. 405 will be bad from El Segundo until it merges with the 5 in the San Fernando Valley.

No problem. I forgot to say the one part I can't tell you about is what the 210 does after you pass the 118 in Sylmar (look on a map). I normally get off the 210 there and then take the 118. But, the 210 route is what I take at 5pm from downtown LA and it moves pretty well. You can expect some traffic on the 5 going into Santa Clarita, but you'd have that any route you take. Good luck.

 

Head up the 57 instead and hit the 210 west to the 134 you'll go around LA.
