What is a final drive ratio?

I understand gear ratios, but what is the final drive ratio?

final drive is the last set of gearing before the wheels.

in a rear wheel drive car, you'd be looking at the differential or the "pumpkin." the gears in there are the final drive gears.

i'm not as up to snuff on front wheel drive, but i'd have to put it at the last trans gear that hits the gears on the axles. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but the last time i saw a front axle there was a gear on it. it's been a while, most of my DIY tinkering has been on RWD cars.

The axle ratio, which all the other gears are multiplied by. It's static, and is just as much a factor in gearing as the transmission ratios.

The engine power is multiplied through the transmission, which then gets multiplied through the differential, which goes to the wheels.

Well I know that the 4th Gen DX and Si had the same exact gearing but different final drives. The DX has really long gearing, and the Si short gearing. So you can see how it can have literally the same gearing, but with a different final drive it will actually drive different.

the final drive in the front wheel drive consists of the gear attached to the differential, and the pinion gear attached to the main shaft.
