Sept. 1996: Unocal says it will give aid to Afghan warlords once they agree to form a council to supervise the project. Taliban take Kabul.
October 1996: Unocal expresses support for Taliban takeover, saying it makes pipeline project easier.
March 1997: Unocal sets up office in Kandahar
June 1997: Unocal says peace is necessary for construction of pipeline, otherwise the project could take years.
December 1998: Citing low oil prices, concerns over Osama bin Laden, and pressure from women's groups, Unocal withdraws from Afghan pipeline consortium.
May 15, 2001: Regarding the placement of the Unocal Pipeline, a U.S. Official delivered ultimatum to the Taliban (via the Pakistani delegation acting as their interlocutors): "Either you accept our offer of a carpet of gold, or we bury you under a carpet of bombs"
Niaz Naik, a former Pakistani Foreign Secretary, was told by senior American officials in mid-July that military action against Afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of October.
Aug. 2001: John O'Neill - Deputy director FBI, established national expert on the al-Qaeda network and in charge of that investigation, resigned in protest over the Bush Administration's obstruction of the ongoing al-Qaeda investigations.
