Default TV question

My GF just bought her first house. The owners left a huge 70" something TV that they didn't want to take with them (due to the size/moving).

I know nothing about TVs, but it's essentially a huge standard box TV with a custom entertainment system built around it. Looks great and it's not bad for watching normal Direct TV and such due to the distance it is across the room.

But does anyone know if standard TVs can be converted to HD?

My guess would be no, but it would be a hell of a lot better playing PlayStation 3 and watching Blueray on the "big TV" rather than in the basement with the 47".

Thanks in advance.

i'm almost completely positive that that kind of "conversion" would not be possible simply b/c there are so many things that would need to change to get from a non-HD television to HD status. stuff like screen resolution, lighting, power, etc would need to be converted.

is the 70" a projector TV? b/c i don't think i've ever seen a non-HD TV that size be anything other than that, e.g. a 70" CRT

Maybe, but it would cost upwards of $7600.

Yes you can convert it to HD quite easily.

Step1: Buy a HD projector.
Step2: Put a 70" screen in front of the TV. (A white sheet can work in a pinch)
Step3: Aim the projector at the screen.
Step4: ???
Step5: Profit.

depends.

You would probably be better off buying a new TV though, you would probably have plenty enough room to pull the TV out and reuse the entertainment center (if it's nice)
