yes and no. they were all Inline 6. The M1 engine is nearly completely different. but between the M6 and the M5 the engines were similar.

rather the engine between the older E28 M5 and the E24 M6 (basically the same). 3.5L DOHC 24v I-6 (286hp).

the E34 M5s engine was 3.6L DOHC I-6 (315hp). In Europe they got the larger 3.8L version of the engine with 340hp in the later model year.
