it's very complicated (how the accident occured) but simply put.

the car lost aerodynamic down force and couldn't make the turn going nearly 200mph. he hit the wall at a slight angle. The impact caused the car to disintegrate.

it didn't happen because of another car or debris on the track.

yes it failed but that is not what caused the accident.

as I stated the car lost aerodynamic down force and the tires didn't have enough traction to make the turn at that speed.

The best explanation I've read is that the car bottomed out, lost a significant amount of downforce from the cessation of airflow under the car a few hundred yards from Tamburello corner.
The Italian courts were debating when the steering collumn failed (before/during /after the crash) for well over a year.
It was the right front wheel and suspension wishbones that broke off when Senna collided with the wall that delivered the fatal blow.

correct and the video footage supports that explanation (sparks coming out of the bottom of the car). the steering column failure did fail but as a result of the impact. it did not cause the failure.

waaiiit a minute... i thought the steering column snapped, causing him to lose control and go into the wall.. there's a website that shows evidence. let me see if i can find it.

i think the video supports this. if i remember correctly, he starts taking the turn, then suddenly goes straight into the wall. i don't see how loss of aerodynamics could do something that drastic.

it looks like it did but the steering column was a top secret one that actually moved several inches in all direction. it was made that way. so if you didn't know about that, it looked like the steering column failed.

found the site. it's just pics, doesn't say much but does suggest that the steering column did fail.

Haven't checked out that link yet, but you can see how litigators got into a big brawl over when the collumn failed.

I somehow recall seeing a BBC program on TLC that re-examined the telemetry record from that fateful day, and showed the vertical axis acceleration sensor flat-line simultaneously with the yaw sensor...

Nonetheless, what a tragedy.
