You just need a voltmeter. Measure DC + from the charge post of the alternator, with the other probe grounded. It should have 14v. You can also probe across the + and - posts of the battery and measure voltage with the car on, and then off. There should be about 2v difference if the alternator is charging.

The easiest thing is to go to Auto Zone and have them connect their electrical system dignosificator to your car and check the whole thing for free.
