I must have been lagging or something. When the block broke apart, I saw the lift piece, the block piece, and a shadow. It's like the parts didn't come back together to form a piston.
Now I have all of these (what i'm guessing) animations in my inventory, instead of actual blocks.

Lab's place is a death trap at night. I ventured over there to see if anything was left when i died. i died 4 more times over there. i was able to get most of my stuff back. he has no light on the top of his place so it was loaded with creepers. i died outside because i saw easy pickings. his upside down pyramid has too much shadow. multiple skeletons, enderman and creepers. its like dawn of the dead out there during the day.
