We just started learning the program last week at school. Pretty good stuff... All I've done so far is a sea horse
If you're coming from Max or Lightwave, Maya should only take about a week or so to get used to the interface.
I just got it today too

axeman: Do you have any tutorials or anyone guiding you? I'm about to register on the cgtalk.com board. Lots of neat stuff there. Also check out 3dtotal.com for easy tutorials. Haven't really done any tutorials on Maya though. I tried the Honda NSX tutorial on a Civic, but didn't turn out very well. Maybe I should stick to box modeling.

I was reading through the tutorial that came with the software. Don't really have time to play with it that much so its kinda not getting too much attention. Once school closes I'll be whoring the boards to find more tips.
Here's a very important tip I learned the hard way. When you hit the extrude button, it does an extrude even though you don't move it, so be VERY careful with that. The extrude will occur, even though the new vertices are in the same places as the old ones, and you'll be stuck with an extra set of points...NOT UNDOABLE if you proceed to model like this. Like today I had to start a whole spaceship from scratch because I extruded a whole bunch of polygons and didn't know it.
What's cool though is that you could delete vertices and edges without ruining the mesh, not like in Max. Bomb diggity.
