Bike crew vs. I'm a member now
So I've really been wanting to get into doing some light trail riding and just general bike riding. I used to ride when I was younger, but got out of it like most people. Well as the years go by, I've put on some weight and figured riding would be a good/fun way to get some exercise. So I went out today and bought an entry level (very entry level) mountain bike for $150. It's a Genesis 26" 21 speed. It's got full suspension and front disc brakes & v-brakes in the rear. I know it's not much and I probably should have spent a little more, but for what I'm going to be using it for...it should be fine.
The only issue I'm having is I'm having difficulty raising the handle bars. I've adjusted my brakes, seat and moved my gear shifters around to where I want. But I can't figure out how to raise the bar. I'll post a pic of what the bars look like and if you guys could help me I'd appreciate it.
Here's just a few shots of the bike to begin with:
And this is where/how the bars mount:

You might be able to pick up a new stem that goes up at more of an angle, a good local bike store should have several to choose from back in the parts department.

Someone has that exact bike on my campus. Looks to be more expensive than $150 in person...good pickup.
$150 for front disk brakes, non-twisty shifters and full suspension ... pretty good buy in my opinion. It will probably serve you very well until you decide to upgrade.

you cant just add spacers, you move them above/below the stem on the steerer tube, but dont remove/add
it appears that the only spacer left on top is the stem cap so nothing to be gained here
although you shouldnt be raising them at all for proper bike fit...
if you want more input i am biting my tongue but i dont want to be too brutal on your new toy
stoked for additions to the bike krew

if that seat is setup correctly then your balls are going to become close friends with the top tube, and not nice thoughtful friends, but more like of the keep your enemies closer variety
are you getting full leg extension during pedal stroke?
if so i would say you need a smaller frame, your future children will thank you
if not then raise it up so you just about extend your knee all the way during the bottom of the stroke
fyi, standard cross country mountain bike geometry places the handlebars an inch or two BELOW the saddle height
