Default My rant for the day...

I am taking a Sociology and Anthropology class, and if you don't know already Soca deals with people of other cultures. The class is one of those lecture classes with 100+ kids and about 90% of them are freshmen.

Today we were watching a movie called Dead birds filmed in the 60's in New Guinea about a local tribe. It was 3 parts but we were gonna watch only 2. When the first part got done most of the class was like "Do we have to watch the other one, its so boring."

Thats when I got really mad. If you don't wanna learn about other cultures then why the f*ck did you take this class. Its like people find it amusing that some cultures have wierd traditions and yet get offended when someone mentions that what they think is normal seems strange to others. I really wonder sometimes whether there should be a mental age test for kids before they are sent to college or sent to join the work force because there are a lot of people out there that are mentally still 3 years old.

End of rant, I guess I am the wierd one that really wants to learn more about this world that what goes on inside these 4 walls.

hehe, two words, "graduation requirement," hehe

college is all about LEARNING, and diversity, and experiencing new things... if these kids are freshmen, how do you expect them to know everything they're supposed to know by the END of college?

yeah i agree w/ you axe.

no one is forcing you to go to college, you are chosing to go there to further your own life...so taking a voluntary class, then complaining about it completely hypocritical.

Coz they are 20 f*cking years old and still freshmens. Sometimes I wish their parents would give me the money they are spending on their kids coz I could put it to better f*cking use. In 6 months I get thrown out of this country if I don't find a grad school. Great and there are kids earning 100k a year that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Yes that brings me to another rant... why the hell do people have to have such messed up laws. My whole family are either US citizens by birth or are naturalized by going through the whole immigration process... all except me... I have to wait 6 more years... potentially spend 4 of those living in Ireland where I don't know anybody.

again that may not be a voluntary class, i know there were PLENTY of retarded classes i had to take (for example, western philosophy) where i displayed JUST the kind of ignorance and apathy you speak of. the reason i took it was because the only other options in that general-ed-section area were intro to music (even more worthless, not to mention a waste of $200 added materials) and like, stupid varieties of art classes (also another $200 in added CRAP that you'd have to buy). i chose to have the LEAST wasted cash and take the least-retarded option, and it was still retarded.

its voluntary in the fact that they aren't forced to go to college.

No... but you can tell... specially when you've seen them around campus for the last 2 years sitting in the same damn freshman classes.

Brings me to a great point... most people don't appreciate college until they've worked in a dead end job making minimum wage. I was one of those guys that thought college was over rated and after I graduated HS I decided to try and make it in the real world... took 1.5 years for me to realize that without an education I am going nowhere.
