some info

Porsche has confirmed that its 918 Spyder supercar will go into production.

A concept version of the revolutionary plug-in hybrid model shocked visitors to this Geneva motor show with CO2 emissions of 70g/km despite boasting true supercar performance. This includes 0-62mph in 3.2sec and a 198mph top speed.

The petrol part of the 918's drivetrain is a 500bhp mid-mounted V8 engine that is shared with Porsche's RS Spyder race car. This is combined with a pair of electric motors that add another 218bhp to the 918's tally. One motor drives the front wheels while the rears are powered by both the petrol engine and the remaining electric unit.

This hybrid technology means that the 918 returns 78mpg and can travel up to 16 miles on battery power alone.

The decision to make the 918 Spyder a full production car reflects, according to Porsche, "overwhelming reponse from the public and customers" to the Geneva concept car.

Michael Macht, Porsche CEO, said: "Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

Yeah, I don't know if they'll be able to do the clear wheels on the production model...but they look cool. o:

Should have some nice black wheels.
