I kicked my ass today
Yep, went snowboarding for the first time. Some friends and I went to Summit for the day. The drive up there was pretty nice, but unfortunately I left my camera in the trunk so that sucked... Last night I went on a last-minute shopping spree and got all my gear for a whopping $70! Good to buy during the off-season eh?
Keep in mind that I'm trying to type as best as I can... My fingers hurt so much...
Anyway...
We tried out the beginner's slope first, since I'm the only newbie in the group. As soon as I got off the lift the next chair hit me on the shoulder.
See no one told me what to do (put back foot on the board and kick off). Asshats. All I could do was go straight really fast. I didn't know how to stop either, so I ate shiet pretty much every 20 feet. I went twice on the bunny slope, just doing that, and my friends said we should all go on one of the trails.
So we hopped on the next lift up (about a 5-minute ride) and chose a path to go on. Naturally, everyone ripped but me. They were like "just keep on your heels!!!" Me being the dumbass that I am, couldn't quite comprehend. I think it took me like an hour to get down the first path. I slid into mud probably like 5 times, then I crawled back out to the middle only to slide into the mud again! wtf... So I just tried keeping on my heels, going down at a blistering 0.03 mph (standing still with the board parallel to the shoulders). At this point I didn't know how to turn yet so everytime there was a turn, I'd fall on my ass, crawl to get into the proper direction and resume.
When I got down, one of them decided to wait for me. He then told me that the only way out was to get on the lift and board down another path, which was significantly longer. I was like "F@(*&!@(*@&#!!!" So we went up and met everyone else there. We went down another path, and of course they left me behind. This time, I got the hang of the standing still and keep on the heels part, but still couldn't steer. After eating shiet for about half a mile, I managed to go down the wrong path. Ate shiet again while trying to stop. This time I flipped and my shirt rode up, causing my bare back to brush against the cold, cold snow. Ouchies.
I took off my board and walked back up to the correct path, and as I was trying to put the board back on, it f*ckin' slipped away!!! So I ran after it, but it was too fast... I was destined to walk the walk of shame... Ooohhh... Some guys on the nearby lifts were yelling "Your board went all the way!!!" I'm glad one of us did... Good thing my "friends" were waiting for me at the bottom, because someone tried to jack my rental board, so they showed him "what's up."
After eating a righteously expensive lunch, they went back up for a longer run - a more difficult one too. I stayed behind because my ass felt like I came from Deek's house with Kirkles as the other bun in the sammich. I took a short nap on the benches, and woke up...literally inspired. It was like a freakin' ray of hope bursting through the clouds! I thought to myself "Dammit Dom, get this shiet down! You're going to do this, and you will NOT fall!" So I grabbed all my gear and went to some path where you had to slow down and control the speed of the board. I hopped off, cruising nonchalantly off the lift and skidding to a stop. Smooth. I snapped on the board and proceeded down. Within seconds I was shifting my weight, braking, turning left and right, keeping on the heels and toes - - I felt like a god!
I got down and asked my friends if they wanted another run, but they were all tired and Summit would close in 10 minutes anyway. Too little too late. At least I'll be ripping it up next time (summer break - woo hoo!).
I didn't take much pics, but if you want, I could post them. No action shots aside from the little mountain run we did going back down. Oh, and I saw a blue M.O.B.works hatchback on the way down too... Clean as fawk.
So now, after the 2-hour trip back home, I'm hurting like a mofo. My forearms and shoulders hurt from pushing up after I fell (many times). My legs hurt from, well, yeah. My fingers, from being numb after lunch, and most of all, my abdomen, from sliding with my shirt half up for about 300 feet. It's so red.
All in all, I had a blast though. Can't wait to go back.
