[SPOILER="here's the catch"] Andrea Wernick, a 63-year-old executive recruiter with platinum blond locks, just slipped on a size-0 bandage dress from Herve Leger with the ease of teenage supermodel. Her secret? Wernick, a Type-A Manhattanite who believes that looking great is non-negotiable, works out for a minimum of seven hours a week, no matter what.

“I have a fabulous body,” says Wernick, proudly.

“I look beautiful. I look better than most 30-year-olds I see.”
Wernick fits her regimen in alongside social obligations and her work schedule, since she worries about “letting myself go. I mean look at Sophia Loren. What happened to her?”

After giving up a three-pack-a-day Marlboro habit in her 40s, Wernick committed to breaking a sweat daily, crossing off any conflicts on her weekly schedule.

If you think Wernick sounds like she’s gone overboard, bear in mind, she’s doing just what the doctor orders. Last month, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study on women and weight gain, tracking some 34,000 women in their 40s, 50s and older over the course of 15 years. Those women who worked out for 60 minutes every day — or at least seven hours a week — managed to maintain their girlish figures, while those who lagged behind began packing on the pounds.

But with many New York women already juggling hectic schedules, families and demanding jobs, the study begged the question: Is a minimum of one hour of exercise, 365 days a year, even possible? For a certain segment of busy local women like Wernick, the answer is a definitive yes; working out that much is no sweat.

Julie Rothman, a 40-something TV executive, read about that study and realized she already works out that much — and more, when she includes walking around Manhattan.

“I know some women who say they’re like Sarah Jessica Parker and just stay in shape by, you know, stretching, but for me it’s something I work hard at every day,” she says. “Between the hours at the gym and pounding the pavement to get from A to B, I absolutely get at least seven hours a week.”

Says Wernick, who thinks that pumping iron is worth the effort: “I come from a family of large women, and I’ve changed my entire metabolism.”
