Default Hepl Needed - Xp Pro

My computer will no longer bbot the the desktop.... I turn it on, it scans chkdsk, then at 82% the screen comes up saying:

Windows\Dump3846.tmp is cross linked on Allocation Unit887881.

what does this mean? and how do i fix it??

have you ran scandisk? boot with the CD and go into repair console?

don't remember if xp pro has that feature or now :dunno:

i'd try to bring it up in safemode first and then if that doesn't work pop in the xp cd and try to repair that bish

scan disk is Chkdsk in XP... so yes, it does that each time i turn it on... but it stops at 82%

when i went into safe mode...... it comes up saying:

......Multi(0)Disk(0)Rdisk(0).....system32 etc....... and a whole bunch of garbage on the whole page, then activity stops.


i also tried to boot into last known configuration.... but it comes up as not able to.....

because this is actually my cousins computer i built for them... and whenever i encounter any XP errors etc... i just re format the HD, and reinstall XP..... but they dont want to lose any info.

can you backup any files any way?

to repair, just boot from the CD ...theres an option to do so. if i remember correctly
