Default PS2 DVD issues.

Is anyone else having trouble with rented DVD's playing on a PS2? I have noticed that lately, with new releases it gives me a "Read Error" message. However, new DVD's that my friends have BOUGHT, not rented, work just fine. The guys at Hollywood Video said that there is some new copyright code on rented DVD's that the PS2 can't read for some reason. Interesting. Sony said that they should work fine and just do an auto diagnostic, that worked for "The Ring" but isn't for Road to Perdition or 8 mile. Also, Sony said they use the same DVD driver in home DVD players and computer DVD as well, thus being the case, my Mac has a Sony DVD and driver, yet it will play them just fine. I am seriously pissed off. If I have to buy a DVD player for this reason, i am making Sony pay for it. One of the main reasons I bought a PS2 is for the DVD playback capability. I guess I will have to pay the $40 for the Xbox DVD kit to avoid buying yet another electronic gizmo to squeeze into my rack.

I hope there is another solution, andbody know what the real deal is?

ps2's suck in a ton of dust over the course of a year...you can take it apart and clean it really good, or just deal....make sure it isn't hooked up through your vcr and it hooks directly in to your tv (if it has the av hookup, cuz older tvs don't)...some dvd's have copy protection on them and won't play right when ran through anything like a vcr or whatever......i cleaned mine and it helped a lot

It is actually connected to my receiver, then over to the TV through S-Video. I have never had a problem in the last two years, but now, it is all poop.
