I want to pick them up a Prepaid phone for emergency use and letting us know they're safe while they are there. Anybody know a good provider to use for this? Right now they have Verizon and I don't think they'll get good coverage there.

In general you should make sure they have a GSM UNLOCKED phone. once they get in they can purchase a prepaid sim card with credit on it. The sim will run a couple of buck and credit will usually be enough for them to call you in the states. In total it should be cheaper then 10$ for enough credit to call you and keep you posted using SMS. Also keep in mind that incoming on prepaid in Africa is free... so if you want to save you tell them to get the sim and txt you their new number. you can call them and it wont use any of their credit.
Ok, She just told me the first leg is going to be in Johnnasburg and the other leg in Cape Town
oh man... when are they going?
Cape town is amazing... Joburg is nice too.
So back to the main issue in S. Africa they wont have a problem at all. In the airport it self they'll be able to purchase a prepaid sim card at the MTN store. Just put it in the phone and they'll be able to call. Last time i went the rate for S.Africa to Canada was cheap. The other advantage is that they'll be able to call local places with the phone too (for resevations, taxis and shit like that).
The same sim will be serve for Joburg and Cape town
