HDTV Question
Let's say I want a 60" screen.
But my couches are only set up a few feet (about 5-6) from my TV stand.
Does it REALLY matter?

you'll notice how bad/good your screen is from that distance ... so i'd invest in a good one
i've read the rule of thumb for optimum distance is 10:1 ... 60" would be 6 feet... etc.

Does the fact that it's a DLP rear-projection factor into that as opposed to LCD.. etc?
The factory recommendation is 7 feet.

with those you will see the surface of the screen (kindalike a mesh/grid material)
after a while you get used to it.. i'd be more concerned with being able to see the whole screen at the same time from that close.

5-6", I'd go for a 42"....even 50" is pushing it.
