Should also mention that there needs to be a US counterpart for insurance. I know a guy who owns two R34 Skylines that have to be registered as 300ZX on his insurance because there is no US counterpart for it and that is as close as they could find. he takes a hit big time if he totals one of them...not that it would matter to him but these are some of the issues to deal with.

couldn't this be corrected by the specialty insurance market? we always used this one insurance company did custom and classic muscle insurance for cars that weren't easily insured through the mainstream companies. where they send an adjuster and review receipts to give a true to market replacement value the vehicle will be insured for instead of what the vehicle books for. seems like they would do custom imported vehicles as well :dunno:

Yeah he had mentioned that at one point but the cost of it was stupid high especially since he was planning to list them as regular drivers instead of weekend warriors. He drives one of them daily the 35 miles to work so likelihood of an accident climbed as did the rates.

I bet the insurance companies dont even know the policy and procedure for those cars. maybe why they just picked the 300zx. its like if you got a silvia over here and just told insurance company it was a regular old 240.

this also. while japan "may have strict emmissions" they are different from USA. plus their crash regulations are not as strict.

i read somewhere long ago that if you were importing a car and there was no crash data on it. IE someone never brought it over to the states before. you would have to buy 2 and crash one so they knew where to reinforce it.

this is the big money you spend on when importing gray market cars. its legalizing them for America. i also saw somewhere in that PDF i posted that you can only drive them 2,500 miles a year. doesn't sound right, but very plausible i guess.

Incredible how much you have to go through for such an easily spoken task. Too bad you couldnt just walk into some place and say you want your skyline or silvia or whatever to be registered and insured.
